Video platform change for fest21

Fest21 relied since its start on VPOD.TV video platform.

We are in the process of changing the video platform for a couple of reasons:

- Our partner VPOD has changed its business model and no longer works as a B2C site

- VPOD will no longer maintain its existing API 1.0

We are working hard to install the new platform, a very complicated process.

There will most likely be a few bugs and problems during this migration process, we are sorry about that. Specificaly, the video upload fonction will only be re-installed after the migration is completed.

Between VPOD' problems and the curent migration, there might be some problems with a few videos. We are try ing to keep these problems to a minimum.

Again our sincere apologies and best wishes for a happy new year to you all.

Capri Hollywood to open with The Brothers Bloom european premiere

the "Capri, Hollywood 2008 - Honda International Film Festival" will open on december with the European premiere of Rian Johnson's "The Brothers Bloom".

The Brothers Bloom is a 2009 caper film written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Mark Ruffalo, Adrien Brody, Rachel Weisz, Zachary Gordon, Nora Zehetner and Rinko Kikuchi. Shooting began in Belgrade, Serbia on March 19, 2007 and ended recently. The film is budgeted at $20 million. It will have a limited release on May 15, 2009, and expand into wide release two weeks later on May 29.

The world's greatest con men, the Brothers Bloom, have made a living off of swindling millionaires with complex scenarios of lust and intrigue. Stephen (Ruffalo) and Bloom (Brody), and their silent partner and sidekick Bang-Bang (Kikuchi) team up for one last job, conning beautiful heiress Penelope (Weisz) by taking her on a tour of the world and relieving her of US$2.5 million. On the way, Bloom (who has no first name in the entire movie) falls for Penelope, which complicates the con severely.

REEL NEWS

Greetings from the sun and surf of Santa Cruz!

As we gear up for next May, I wanted to take a look back at the 2008 Festival and share with you the activities of some of the films we presented then. It was a fantastic Festival with a terrific program (if I may so myself). Over those nine beautiful Spring days, we screened 149 films from all over the world to a record audience of nearly 8000 film lovers. This is truly a testament to the dedication and enthusiasm of our community for independent film and video.

Many of the films we showcased during the 2008 Festival have enjoyed further success since then:

SCFF Best of the Fest Winner, Chaz Thorne’s JUST BURIED secured US and Canadian distribution after the Festival. The film went into wide release in Canada in July through a deal with Seville Pictures. In the US, Liberation Entertainment released the film in October in selected theatres and plans a January 27, 2009 DVD release. Tell your friends!

Stewart Wade’s TRU LOVED, SCFF Best Actress Award Winner for Najarra Townsend, also secured distribution with Regent Releasing and went into limited release in October in California, New York, Chicago, Seattle and Ft. Lauderdale. The film also continues to screen at a number of film festivals and art house cinemas around the country.

Independent British Feature, and SCFF Jury Prize Winner, SUMMER SCARS by Julian Richards has continued its Festival run picking up more awards along the way. So far, the film has won awards for Best Child Acting at the Seattle True Independent Film Festival and the Bronze Award for Suspense/Thriller at WorldFest Houston. Additionally, it was a BAFTA Cymru Winner (the Welsh branch of the British Academy Awards) for Best Newcomer to Al Wilson for writing, and Winner for Best Title Graphics, and was a Nominee for Best Film.

Finally, Joshua Tickell’s FIELDS OF FUEL continues to screen around the country and was recently named as one of the 15 documentaries to the shortlist for the Academy Awards. Best of luck, Josh!

We are thrilled at the accomplishments of the films from our 2008 Festival and wish them, and all the other films, the greatest of further success. We’re proud to have been a part of their achievements and look forward to continuing to support the success of all the films we present and will present in the future.

We are in the midst now of reviewing films for the 2009 Festival and are excited about what we are seeing so far. As usual, we are blessed with an abundance of quality work in all categories and will be forced to make some very difficult choices when we construct the Festival’s program. I am sure you will be as ecstatic as we are about the program when it is announced in April.

In the meantime, our Call for Entries is open and we are accepting films and videos for consideration until the end of January. Please spread the word to all and any filmmakers who might be interested in participating in the Santa Cruz Film Festival. We promise and amazing venue to showcase their work and the best film audience around! Information on entering can be found at our website: www.santacruzfilmfestival.org.

See you at the Festival!

Cinema-going in 2008 – some forecast

What is 2008 going to be like for the cinemas? It is still too early to give an answer because, although the end of the year is close, we already know that these last few weeks, and in particular the Christmas period, are of crucial importance for cinema-going. Frequently, cinema-going in November and December has proved to be critical for determining the year's results.
The appointment with the European Film Awards nonetheless encourages us to hazard a few predictions based on the results of the first nine or ten months of the year and on the judgement of authoritative representatives of the European cinema community.

After a 2007 characterized by the dip in audiences but also by the positive affirmation of European films, what can be expected of 2008? Will cinema-going have suffered from the consequences of the negative trend in the economy and on the financial markets or, as has already happened in the past, will it manage to swim against the current, catching hold of the desire to escape from the difficulties of daily life?

From the five main European markets, those that are "worth" at least a hundred million spectators each (or even approaching the coveted two-hundred million threshold), various different signals are coming.

As regards Spain, the wave of drops in admissions, which began in 2005, does not seem to be coming to an end in 2008. "After one of the best summer seasons of the last years, we estimate that overall admissions will be about 10 million less than in 2007. In fact 2008 suffers from the lack of very successful domestic productions such as the horror movies El Orfanato and Rec, two blockbusters both at home and abroad", says Borja de Benito Porto, Head of Communications and Marketing at Federación de Cines de España.

Italy arrives at the threshold of the Christmas period with a slight dip: this means that the results of the two-month November-December period will be decisive, in particular the Christmas holidays, a traditional time for the release of the "made in Italy" comedy, which draws mass audiences. "Tickets sold in the first ten months of 2008 show a 5% decrease compared to the previous year. If we consider that 2007 was an exceptional year, characterized by a 11% increase, we can be satisfied with the expected results for 2008" says Paolo Protti, President of ANEC. "The real challenge will be in 2009, when we'll see how cinema will react to the financial crisis". In the meantime it can already be confirmed that, after a 2007 market share amounting to 33%, in 2008, too, Italian productions have not only won an important share of the home market (at the end of October one point more compared to the previous 12 months), but also international visibility, thanks to the success of Gomorra (1.7 million tickets sold at home) and Il Divo (783,000 tickets).
Italian statistics see European productions, including the French films La Graine et le Mulet and Persepolis, the German Der Baader Meinhof Komplex and the Belgian Le Silence de Lorna, in a strong position, even though it must be remembered that in several cases these are co-productions with the United States, like Cassandra's Dreams e Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

"Stable or growing slightly": this is the forecast for the German market by Detlef Rossmann, President of the organization representing the arthouse sector in Germany, who emphasizes the great success of European titles such as Planet Earth (a German - British coproduction totalling 3.7 million spectators in Germany) and Astérix aux Jeux Olympiques, standing at 1.6 million, coming from France, like Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis. The market share of domestic productions - led by Keinohrhasen (4.7 million tickets sold by the end of June) is very high too.

"After recording an exceptional number of admissions in the summer - the highest for forty years - the United Kingdom is confident of repeating, if not improving on, the excellent 2007 results, i.e. over 160 million spectators," says Philip Clapp, Chief Executive Officer of CEA, whose calculations are supported by attentive analysts of the British market, who have taken into consideration not only the trend of the first ten months of the year but also the potential of coming releases over the next few weeks.
In 2008 the commitment of the UK Film Council, supporting the circulation of foreign-language films, continues, thanks also to the fast track by which distributors can obtain economic support for digital distribution. Consequently, the titles that have appeared in British cinemas also include specialty films such as Caramel, 4 Luni 3 Saptamini si 2 Zile, Caos calmo, Mio fratello è figlio unico, Anche libero va bene. All-round optimism for France, which closes October with almost 153 million spectators, or 3.6% more than the same month in 2007. Good news, too, in terms of domestic productions, which have secured as much as 47% of the market up to now, three points more than those made in the USA.

Amongst the titles that cross national borders, apart from those already mentioned, are Babylon A.D., Taken and the 2008 Golden Palm Entre les Murs, sold on fifty or so markets and already released in Belgium and Italy.

Lastly, amongst the most interesting expressions of European filmmaking, capable of establishing themselves on the international scenario, are two productions coming from small but dynamic countries: the bold Danish production Flammen & Citronen, dealing with the German occupation, bold in terms of both the resources used and the topic it deals with, and the Belgian Fly me to the Moon, which has succeeded in its task of distinguishing itself on the innovative scenario of 3D productions that are candidates for digital screening.

To sum up, Europe is giving us quality content and forward-looking technology.

The Dubai International Film Festival today honoured two of its three 2008 Lifetime Achievement Awards recipients in a special press conference.

Tsui Hark, a major Hong Kong filmmaker, and Rachid Bouchareb, an Algerian-French director, were present to discuss their work with the audience.

Terry Gilliam, the third honouree, attended DIFF earlier in the week and received his award in a special award ceremony on December 12.

Moderator Simon Field stated: "The idea of the Lifetime Achievement Award is to signal what our ideals are about cinema. The Lifetime Achievement Award figures are people who are extraordinarily unique in their treatment of cinema...they are also filmmakers who've crossed borders, which is very appropriate to DIFF."

Field continued that "all three of these filmmakers are very much at the peak of their work, their activity and their involvement in cinema. They are all working in popular or commercial forms, and have interesting ideas about nationalism, identity and tradition."

Hark has worked for many years in both Hong Kong and in China, and was strongly influential in the regeneration of Hong Kong Cinema in the 1980's. He was instrumental in starting the careers of John Woo and Chow Yun Fat, and reenergized the popular ‘wuxia' genre that became popular around the world. Rachid Bouchareb is a prolific producer and director involved with films such as West Beyrouth and this year's DIFF film Niloofar. His Indigenes: Days of Glory showed at DIFF 2006 and won the Best Actor prize for its entire ensemble of actors at Cannes 2006. His new film London River will show in Berlin in the coming months.

Simon Field pointed out that each director combines an eye for commercial, popular cinema with an intellectual approach. Hark said that he has always had to work in commercial genres, since it would be difficult to survive in Hong Kong otherwise, but Bouchareb said that in France, government support for cinema is so strong that directors may continue to work even if they never have a box office success.

Accordingly, both directors had a very different take on the situation of world cinema today. Hark said that since the Chinese market has opened up to Hong Kong cinema, the situation has much improved, although the future of the Asian market was uncertain: "Everyone is going to Hollywood, so we're running out of filmmakers and running out of actors to put on the screen...We have to be very alert and concerned about the strength of the industry in order to build up the basis for a future."

Bouchareb expressed his gratitude that since the French government recognizes that cinema is ‘an art, not an industry,' he can be free with his subject matter. He was concerned about this situation being preserved, since the American government has tried to force the French to stop subsidies of the film industry through the World Trade Organization.

Dubai International Film Festival Wrapped most successful edition ever

As the curtain falls on the landmark fifth edition of the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF), the foremost cultural event on Dubai's yearly calendar, organizers have released figures that indicate that the 2008 event was the most successful yet.

A total of 47 500 movie-goers streamed into DIFF's screenings as of Wednesday, December 17, representing a significant increase in festival attendance over 2007. Coveted seats went in a flash, particularly for the festival's Gala films, such as Slum Dog Millionaire and South African apartheid-era biopic Skin, which were sold out to Dubai's inquisitive filmgoing audience.

Shivani Pandya, DIFF's Managing Director, stated: "We are thrilled by high participation from the public and industry members alike, which means that there is a strong enthusiasm in Dubai for our mandate to showcase quality cinema. We are looking forward already to the 2009 festival, and another five years with our warm, supportive and informed Dubai audiences. We have a responsibility to our local community-we are proud to have contributed to putting Dubai on the world film industry map, and will do our utmost to continue to do so."

While Ben Affleck, Salma Hayek, Abdulhussein Abdulredha, Hassan Salwan, Ahmad al Saleh, Goldie Hawn, Preity Zinta, Abhishek Bachchan, Lebleba and Nicolas Cage were some of the highest-profile festival guests, there were approximately 1000 members of the international film industry at DIFF this year, both for the second annual Dubai Film Connection and to attend the workshops, networking events and panel discussions put on by the Industry Office.

Hayek, Zinta and Hawn, along with Danny Glover, Terry Gilliam and Laura Linney were some of the A-list celebrity auctioneers at the second annual Cinema Against AIDS event, which despite global financial woes raised almost USD 2 million for the prominent HIV/AIDS research foundation amfAR.

The fifth edition of DIFF ran from December 11 to 18, 2008.

Dubai International Film Festival Awards

The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) drew to a close last night with a stunning award ceremony to recognize the best films in the festival and in the AsiaAfrica and Arab Muhr Competitions.

The Muhr Awards was expanded this year to include a new AsiaAfrica segment, which embraces films from emerging markets. Some of the entries were submitted from Afghanistan, Turkey, Cameroon and Kazakhstan. The Muhr Awards for Excellence in Arab Cinema was strong than ever this year, with an increased number of applications from filmmakers all over the Middle East and around the world.

Masoud Amralla al Ali, DIFF's Artistic Director, said: "This year our jury members were hard at work trying to evaluate the merits of truly excellent films. We are extremely proud of the films that we have screened, and choosing between them was very difficult. However, we are pleased with the results, and hope to see these filmmakers back at DIFF in following years with new projects."

At the beginning of the evening, three awards were presented to Emirati filmmakers: the prize for Best Emirati Talent went to Haydar Mohammed. Best Emirati Female Filmmaker was presented to Nujoom Al Ghanem, and Best Emirati Filmmaker went to Saeed Salmeen Al-Murry.

For the first time, the International Federation of Film Critics, or FIPRESCI, awarded a Best Arab Film prize to one of the films in the Arab Muhr Competition. The prize went to MASQUERADES by Lyes Salem.

Art By Chance: New Ultra Short Film Festival

Art By Chance: New Ultra Short Film Festival

SHORT FILMS ARE EVERYWHERE NOW!

In metros, airports, shopping centres, trains...

ART BY CHANCE is the brand new "Ultra Short Film Festival" that will be aired in May 2009 all around the world. Films will meet with us un expectedly in 5 countries; US, Canada, Turkey, Netherlands, Germany and 15 cities. New ones adding to the list everyday.

Besides its global dimension, ART BY CHANCE is also unique because the
selected short movies will be presented to the public through the advertising screens instead of movie theatres. ART BY CHANCE will present urban dwellers with stimulating content thus colouring the time slices that are usually considered dead.

UNIQUE SHORT FILM FORM AS WELL AS THE SCREENING

Enthusiastic and creative international film makers will be preparing 30 seconds long, * films *, on "journey" them. ART BY CHANCE opens to movies of all kinds; fiction, animation, documentary and video art with the exception of training and advertising films.

WHEN ADVERTISING SCREENS REPLACE THEATRES

ART BY CHANCE is currently partnering with many digital advertising
network operators throughout the world. With these partnerships ART BY
CHANCE will realize a revolutionary event allowing art to meet millions of people around the world.
The best festival entries will be selected by a jury and will be
screened on digital advertising screens located inside metros, busses,
railways, public transportation terminals, shopping malls and
airports.

LARGEST AUDIENCE EVER REACHED BY A SHORT FILM FESTIVAL

ART BY CHANCE is going to allow film makers to share their work with a
large audience. Viewers around the world will have the opportunity to
watch the best festival movies free of charge and within the course of
their daily routine. This is the largest audience ever reached by a
short film festival. Reaching so many people can only be possible by
taking the screenings outside the theatres where the urban people can see it without an effort.

*The sound using in films is optional. The participants must aware all the screens may not have sound access.

Sheffield Doc/Fest and Northern Film and Media invite you to a special 2-day documentary pitching and marketplace workshop

Sheffield Doc/Fest and Northern Film and Media invite you to a special 2-day documentary pitching and marketplace workshop

Sheffield Doc/Fest is inviting North-East documentary producers and
filmmakers to attend a special FREE two-day workshop in Newcastle on
February 26th and 27th, offering complete preparation for getting your
project funded internationally, including at Doc/Fest’s Marketplace
2009

This workshop is an intensive introduction to the MeetMarket
process, to all Marketplace activities at the festival, and to wider
opportunities in international documentary pitching and funding. Over 2
days, we offer an exclusive window into the priorities of the
international documentary market. This is a chance to learn what UK,
European, North American and other decision-makers are looking for
right now from you, culminating in a chance to pitch your idea to key
UK commissioning editors at the end of the workshop.

“This workshop will aid anyone making documentary film and give you confidence to make your film”

“The best investment in time for directors and producers looking to sell their work”

“An extremely eye opening workshop that both informed me on the pitching process but also filled me with self confidence”

Doc/Fest Pitching Workshop participants 2008

Taking place in Newcastle on February 26th and 27th, the workshop is
an opportunity for producers and filmmakers in the North East to
develop projects one-on-one with the Doc/Fest team, as well as peers.
Led by international marketplace specialist Christina Burnett and
featuring a chance to pitch to national TV commissioning editors, this
is an invaluable opportunity to refine both your ideas and project
presentation skills.

Projects can be at any stage of development. Last year's workshops
led directly to 7 of the 21 UK projects eventually selected for
MeetMarket. There are also many other opportunities to pitch your
project at Sheffield if you are not in the MeetMarket and this workshop
will help you prepare for all the market opportunities at the festival.

Places for this workshop are very limited. To express interest, and for more information, please email Marketplace Producer Charlie Phillips stating your Name and Company (or if you are freelance), along with a
one-page pitch for the project that you’d like to work with at the
workshop and apply to the Doc/Fest Marketplace with. Your project can
be at any stage of development, for any platform, and any genre as long
it is a factual project.

This workshop has been made possible through the kind support of Northern Film and Media

An Interview with Award-winning Filmmaker Greg Pak

stories about love, death and family through experiences with robots) impeccable timing is simply superb! Award-winning writer/director Greg Pak was interviewed by Maria Esteves on January 12, 2004.

ME: Did you become an established writer/director through the International Film Fest Community?

GP: The film festivals helped a huge amount over the years, particularly the Asian American Film Festivals. I'm Asian American. My father is Korean, my mother is White American. Over the years, most of the films that I have made not all have had Asian American actors in them and the first place those films screened were at Asian American film festivals like the Asian American International Film Festival in New York and the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival and other festivals in Los Angeles, DC, Dallas, San Diego, Chicago and even in Canada Toronto, Van Couver and Montreal. Those festivals were hugely important to me particularly in the first couple of years that I was in film school.

ME: What film festivals was "Robot Stories" introduced?

GP: We did our official world premiere at the Hamptons International Film Festival in October 2002. We were one of the films that was in competition. They put me on the panel. The film recieved the best screenplay award which was an amazing experience.

ME: What inspired the making of the film "Robot Stories"?

GP: I grew up reading science fiction, watching "Twilight Zone". I particularly love the kind of stories that deal with technological change from a human perspective. Ray Bradbury short stories were really important to me as a kid. I grew up reading Ray Bradbury. I loved the way he took robots, Martians and rocket ships
and put them in the contents of very concrete human stories. I loved the dark sense of humor combined with sort of genuine humanism. I think that is a clear inspiration for Robot Stories.

ME: The idea of Robots?

GP: I've always been fascinated by them. I guess my childhood generation. I'm 35. I was 8 or 9 when the first Star Wars movie first came out. I grew up playing with the robots that are in the second story in the movie Robot Stories. The second story "The Robot Fixer" deals with a mother whose adult son is in a coma and she's trying to reach him by finishing his robot toy collection and I grew playing with the toys that you see in the movie. Exactly why? I can't tell you. I don't know. Just the idea of mechanical people walking around is compelling to millions including me!

ME: Why Robots?

GP: Another reason why today robots are interesting to me and why they were interesting to me when I was writing Robot Stories is because like all the questions that come up when you talk seriously about robots and artificial intelligence are the same questions that really come up when you talk about the human heart these sort of questions like who am I? what am I doing here? What is my purpose? If you think seriously about artificial intelligence actually coming into existence those are the kinds of questions robots are going to have. They are going to be programmed in certain ways, but if they are genuinely artificially intelligent, they are going to have these same questions that we have. The existential questions of life and death. That's one reason why I think robots are very interesting when you are thinking about telling stories.

ME: I can see the third story, "Machine Love" coming to fruition.

GP: Sure! I think that will happen.

ME: At what point in your life you became interested in the film industry?

GP: It was around that time when I was at Oxford that I had the chance to get involved with practical filming. I was hungry for something creative at that point because I've been working in politics for a year after I graduated from college and something was missing. At Oxford, I had the first chance to get involved to make videos and short films. As soon as I started doing it I knew that's what I needed to do. From Oxford, I went to NYU and did the graduate film program.

ME: What was the first film you directed that pushed you to the public consciousness?

GP: The first short film that I ever had in a festival was called "Visiting Aunt Sue" which I don't talk about because it was a training project but it was very important to me personally as a filmmaker. It was the first chance I got to see my stuff up on the big screen with all audience and to have that experience of connecting with an audience. It was a 4-minute black & white silence short film about a kid whose going to visit his aunt who is this older woman who had a stroke and moves around with a walker. You see her basically on the verge of a second stroke trying to cook this big meal for him, meanwhile, that's cross cut with him hanging out with his friends. Every time you see him he's eating.

ME: What year was that?

GP: That was 1993. It played in festivals and on PBS in New York City. The first short film that started playing in a lot of festivals was called "Mouse" an 11-minute short film about a guy chasing a mouse around his apartment while trying to escape the conversation about pregnancy with his girlfriend. It played in dozens of festivals, public televisions in a lot of different cities. It's actually going to play nationally as part of this color vision which will be on PBS this month January 16th. Color Vision is the name of the series. It's a bunch of short films by filmmakers.

The other short film I made around that time was quot;Fighting Grandpa" a personal documentary about my Korean grandparents. Basically asking the question was my grandparents ever in love? That film won many awards and played in many festivals it also got picked up by Cinamax. "Asian Pride Porn" and "All Amateur Ecstasy" are digital short comedy porn films that became infamous at atomfilms.com. "All Amateur Ecstasy is the third most viewed comedy at atomfilms.com. Each one of those films help me make contacts and now Robot Stories is my big baby!

ME: Would you say that Robot Stories is the first one that pushed you to the public consciousness?

GP: Yes, Robot Stories is the film that's taking me to the next step!

ME: What films and screenplays have you directed and what is the total number of awards honored for each?

GP: "Robot Stories" received 23 awards, "Fight Grandpa" short documentary received 20 awards, "Mouse" received 7awards, "Po Mo Knock Knock" 7 or 8 awards, "All Amateur Ecstasy" got an audience award, "Asian Pride Porn" received 2 audience awards, "Mr.
Lee" got 2 awards.

ME: Any new projects currently in the works?

GP: My co-producer on "Robot Stories" Karin Chien is the producer of my next feature film which is called "Rio Chino" a western set in 1869. The hero is a Chinese gunslinger and he's got a Mexican heroine. This is a non-traditionally cast western adventurous/romance. We are trying to shoot late 2004. That's a project I have been dreaming about for 12 years. That's the project I had in mind when I started film school. Hopefully it will happen this year!

There is a film that I wrote will premiere at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival in January it's called "MVP" directed by Harry Davis. It's essentially a courtroom drama/drug thriller. It's about a criminal lawyer in Detroit who is trying to resign but his sister needs his help because her boyfriend has been arraign for a drug related murder. So now the lawyer gets pulled back into this world he's trying to get out of. He's supposed to be helping his wife form an educational program for kids. Basically trying to start a new life with his wife but his sister needs him to help.
